THANKING TEACHERS -- Barbara Westwater, Head of the Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction, Connecticut Department of Education, congratulates Greenwich Academy English teacher for his advocacy of young writers. Westwater was among the speakers at the fall kickoff for the IMPAC-Connecticut State University Young Writers Program at La Cupola restaurant in Litchfield on Nov. 12. The program has given $100,000 to young writers since 1998.

Schwartz has nominated multiple $1,000 winners in the last several years.

The entry deadline for the next competition is Feb. 1, 2005. Entry forms are available at ctyoungwriters.org

Workshops for young writers will be scheduled next spring at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. CCSU poet in residence Ravi Shankar is organizing this event, which is sponsored by Connecticut Review, the nationally-renowned literary journal published by the CSU System.

Shankar will also be the keynote speaker for the annual young writers dinner on June 5, 2005 at the Litchfield Inn.
