The 11th Annual International
IMPAC Dublin Literary Award 2006

In it's 11th year, the List of Eligible Titles and the Panel of Judges for The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award 2006 were announced in Dublin today.

Honoring novels from around the world and in translation is the hallmark of The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. To date, five out of the 10 winners have been novels in translation. Last year's winner was The Known World by American writer Edward P. Jones.

BACKGROUND
The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award was the initiative of Gay Mitchell, then Lord Mayor of Dublin and Dr. James B Irwin, Chairman of IMPAC in 1992.

The Award is a partnership between IMPAC and Dublin City Council The first Award was presented in 1996 to Australian author David Malouf for Remembering Babylon.  The Lord Mayor of Dublin today continues to act as its patron.

Presented annually, with the objective of promoting excellence in world literature, the award is open to novels written in any language and by authors of any nationality, provided the work has been published in English or English translation in the specified time period as outlined in the rules and conditions for the year.

Since its inception, IMPAC has worked with Dublin City Council to develop the award which has become one of the most prestigious in the world.

IMPAC's total yearly contribution to promote the Award and Dublin City amounts to over e350,000.00 (Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Euro). This involves the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the IMPAC sponsored Young Writer's programmes around the world in conjunction with the Irish Embassies. " This 11 year partnership is a good example of private industry and City government working together for the benefit of the community", said James Irwin, Chairman of IMPAC.

The IMPAC Thailand Young Writers Award co-sponsored with "The Nation" Thailand's leading English newspaper, The IMPAC Malaysian Young Writers Award co-sponsored with "The Star Newspapers", The IMPAC Finland Young Writers Award co-sponsored with "Turun Sanomat" newspaper and, The IMPAC-Connecticut State University Young Writers Award co-sponsored with Connecticut State University in the USA are currently annual events. Six other countries are scheduled to begin in 2006. Winners of these awards are sponsored by IMPAC to attend, with a parent, the June IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in Dublin, Ireland.

The long list of 132 eligible titles announced today features no fewer than 32 titles in translation and covers 15 non-English languages.

The nominations were received from 180 library systems, in 43 countries and from 124 cities from Australia to Chile, from Colombia to Tanzania, Barbados to Uganda - assuring its status as the one truly international Award. Novels first published in English in 2004 are eligible for the award.

This year's nominations include: The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst, Small Island by Andrea Levy, The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews, The White Earth by Andrew McGahan and Sixty Lights by Gail Jones.

There are 6 Irish writers on the long list including Colm Tóibín, Ronan Bennett, Roddy Doyle and Frank Delaney.

The long list consists of works translated from the Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, French, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Colm Tóibín's The Master received the most library nominations with 17 while Gilead by Marilynne Robinson received 14, followed by The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón with 13, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell with 11 and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke with 9.

The Short List will be announced on 5th April 2006 and the Winner on 14th June 2006.
